IMDb rating: 7.5/10
Deeps rating: 8/10
Verdict: Perfectly executed war movie.Good thriller.
#PLOT.
The movie is set during the war in Afghanistan and deals with an operation called Red Wings,a counter terrorist operation to track down and kill Taliban leader Ahmad Shah.Four highly skilled Navy Seals including Marcus Lutterell [Mark Wahlberg],are air dropped into the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan which is a Taliban stronghold. After resuming the operation they accidentally come across some shepherds and take them into custody. They lose their radio control and and as they couldn't receive any further instructions, they decide to show some generosity and set free the shepherds. But they never imagined that this decision will prove so costly that they will soon get surrounded by a whole army of heavily armed Taliban militants.
They fight hard to stay alive but they soon realize that they are heavily out numbered. One by one they fall fighting bravely, taking out as much Taliban militants possible until only Marcus Luttrell remains alive.Gravely wounded Marcus has to survive the severe cold, alone with not much ammunition left in a Taliban stronghold. The survival seems impossible unless something miraculous happens and as they say 'The fortune favors the brave',an unexpected hand of help reaches out to save him from the clutches of the brutal Taliban terrorists.
#POSITIVES.
1. The movie is based on true events and adapted from a novel of the same name written by Marcus Luttrell itself. So as the plot is original it makes your viewing more engaging and absorbing. Luttrell and several other war veterans worked as technical advisors and their contributions are clearly visible in the movie.
2. The battle sequences are well taken and I musy admit it as one of the best I have seen in recent times.
3. Excellent direction by Berg which won his many appreciations.Well researched and ably adapted from the novel.A modest and professional approach to his job.
4. Technically the movie is outstanding with rich visuals and splendid sound mixing and editing.
5. As usual another convincing act from Mark Wahlberg who is one of my personal favorites.
#NEGATIVES.
1. The Afghani characterizations looked awkward and so did their performances.
2. Too much violence which can be disturbing for some.
3. The message of the very war seems to be wrong by this movie.I disagree to this.
4. More focused on the war and battle sequences rather than the war heroes.
#BOX OFFICE AND OTHER DETAILS.
There was heavy bidding to secure the film rights and finally Universal Studios secured it.The filming of war sequences were done in Mexico. The movie was positive critical reception. This reflected in the box office as well. The movie was a big success at the box office too gathering $154 million against a budget of $40 million.Yet another hit for Mark Wahlberg in his great career.
TIP OF THE DAY; THE BRAVE SURVIVE EVEN AFTER DEATH.
