Lots has to be told about Melvin Udall [Jack Nicholson].
1.He is ultra hygienic that he don't want anyone to touch him nor does he touch someone.
2.He is a loner and loves to be like that.He hates someone knocking on his door.
3.He is an obsessive-compulsive writer and a best selling novelist.
4.He has his own place in his daily restaurant and he is quite adamant about his utensils.
5.He is quite particular about his waitress in the restaurant.
6.He is irritating and can be quite hurting by his words.
7.He is afraid of threats and is a coward and superstitious too.
8.He hates neighbors and tries every opportunity to be a nuisance for them.
9.He acts eccentric and so is restless.
10.He hate Dogs.
All this qualities add up to his paranormal personality with a sectarian nature. In short everyone around him hates him.And he loves to be hated and doesn't mind to be introvert.
A dog which he hated the most ,changes his life forever. When his neighbor Simon is hospitalized,Melvin is forced to look after his dog for some weeks.Slowly he starts liking this dog and dedicates more care for it.The dog becomes the first companion in his lonely life. His waitress Carol [Helen Hunt],often hurt by Melvin's words and deeds one day decides to quit her job.Her son is suffering from asthma and this has been a big worry in her life.Melvin reaches her home in search of her as he could not find her in the restaurant. He decides to help out Carol with her sons treatment exposing the softer side of him.Even though Carol refuses to be helped by a crank like Melvin, she has no other way to raise money and finally agrees.Melvin realizes that he need a transformation in life and starts taking his pills as advised by his doctor. He wants to convey his feelings about her but words often fail him and he ends up annoying her.
Love is strange as Melvin realizes;it makes him restless, sleepless and more importantly a better person.Soon the good guy inside Melvin comes in light and he turns out to be a helping hand for Simon and Carol. But still he fail to express his affection towards Carol and he must do so before its too late......
Jack Nicholson,Ohhhh!!! my god!!!....No words to express his performance in this one.He seems ultra refined, super cool and preeminent as Melvin.I can't imagine another one in this role as it demands a lot of versatility and composure to play this emotional yet stubborn character.Helen Hunt looks stunning and depicts Carol well.Well scripted and directed this movie is sublime throughout. No wonder both the lead actors won the top glories at the Oscar's.You don't want to miss this one.GO FOR IT....
