"THERE WAS NOTHING IN THE WORLD DURING THOSE DAYS THAT WAS WORTH A SMILE.IT WAS ALL WAR ,BLOOD,STARVATION,BETRAYELS,TEARS AND DEATH.THERE WAS NO LOVE AT ALL"
The movie is all about the romance between Ada Monroe[Nicole Kidman] and Inman[Jude Law] set in the back drop of late 1860 American civil war.Two people who has barely met before war but treasures those few moments like a bag of diamond for years through a war which lasted for almost 3 years.Inman who enlisted himself to fight for the Confederate army had to leave behind Ada ,the girl he met a few days before in a small town called Cold Mountain. The war which was supposed to be over in one month gets nasty and protract into a bloody civil war for almost 4 years. All men and children from every home are taken away by the army to fight leaving behind the ladies and old in despair, pain and wait.
Ada almost wrote 103 letters to Inman during those days without any reply and his villagers assumed him to be dead. But Ada's wait continues so does her prayers. After almost three years of fighting wounded Inman deserts the army to get back to his lady love. His dangerous journey back to the Cold Moutain escaping the eyes of his own army men,who are determined to clench the deserters and the enemy Yankees,is the main composition of this award winning movie box office hit.
The movie starts off with war sequences which are so crudly shot which makes you yawn for the first 15 minutes but then slowly the movie gathers pace and starts arousing you.The introduction of the character Ruby Thewes[Renee Zellweger] bring in the much needed humour and energy to this movie. She won a lots of awards for her character of Ruby including the Academy awards and The Golden Globe.
The most adorable part of the movie is the small cameo of the evergreen actress Natalie Portman as Sara. The great actress just fits into that small cameo perfectly.Watching through ,the movie gets more and more captivating untill the gripping climax. For sure this movie is a gem for serious movie lovers.
As I wrote before the war scenes looked dragging with no long shots and thrills and so was the long awaited scene of the two lovers reunion after years of wait. The scene lacks the craving and emotion one expected. Some scenes looked dragging and the film would have been better off withoutthem and it would also made the film shorter. Two and a half hours is a bit too long.
Nicole Kidman excels in her role, stepping into the shoes of Kate Winslet who usually is any directors first preference for period dramas especially of 18-19th centuries.Jude Law perfectly suits in to the romantic side of his character but fails to impress as a gritty soldier. The best role was Ruby played by Renne and that was the soul of this entire movie.
I wont recommend you to watch this movie with your kids as the movie contains some adult scenes which by no means looks unnecessary or overdone, but still it wont be advisable to take your children along. If you can get through the first 15 minutes then this movie is an excellen twatch with a gripping climax.
